You have an idea for a show you want to put together, and you're wondering how to go about it to ensure maximum success?! Check out these tips!

I'm not a pro at organizing shows, however I'm writing this based off my experience putting together "The Excess Love Show" (check it out if you haven't!)

1. Solidify your idea/theme - What is the purpose of the show? Is there a theme that you want shared throughout the show? What do you want the audience to gain from the show? How do you intend to make sure that there is a "take-away"? If you can answer this question then you're solid!

2. Content - What is the content of the show? Is it only you performing different pieces, or will there be other artists (dancers, musicians, poets, etc.)? If other artists will be in show, think of the ones you feel will best portray the theme of the show, and add value to the show, and the audience experience.

3. Create a timeline - this is very important! Create a timeline or an outline! Keep in mind that your timeline and outline will change several times in the planning stage. Make sure your timeline includes:

  • Date of show

  • When technical needs will be collected: background music, biography to include in program, lighting narrative (if at all), etc.

  • When to have all publicity materials created and distributed

  • Confirmation of venue, technical crew, media crew, performers: times, compensation, etc.

  • Final show order created

  • Rehearsal times, dress rehearsal (if applicable)

4. Create a budget - You can't have a successful show if your $$$ is not on point. It's important to create a budget that includes all the costs you're incurring: Artist fees, technical crew fees, media crew fees, publicity material fees, venue fees, etc. Keep in mind that these tips are general, you may have none of these expenses or even more than the ones listed. Try to maintain a budget, especially for future planning.

5. Tickets - How do you intend to sell tickets or distribute tickets? It's 2018, there are so many options! You could use eventbrite, paper tickets, online tickets, tickets sold at the door upon arrival, etc. The best to do is to think of who your audience is, and which method would resonate best with them.

These are just a few tips I thought to share with you! If you have more tips, or questions, please feel free to comment below or send me an email!

All the best!
